The P2111 trouble code indicates that the electronic throttle actuator is stuck in the open position.
Modern vehicles use an electronic throttle control system (drive-by-wire) instead of a traditional throttle cable. The engine control module (ECM) controls the throttle plate using an electric motor inside the throttle body.
When the ECM detects that the throttle plate remains open when it should be closing, it stores the code:
P2111 — Throttle Actuator Control System Stuck Open.
This issue can cause uncontrolled engine speed, reduced power mode, or serious drivability problems.
The electronic throttle system includes several key components:
throttle actuator motor
throttle position sensors
accelerator pedal position sensor
engine control module (ECM)
When you press the accelerator pedal:
1️⃣ The pedal sensor sends a signal to the ECM
2️⃣ The ECM commands the throttle actuator motor
3️⃣ The motor opens the throttle plate
If the throttle plate remains open or does not respond correctly, the ECM triggers the P2111 code.
To prevent engine damage, many vehicles immediately activate limp mode.
Drivers may notice several symptoms when this code appears.
Typical symptoms include:
Check Engine Light
high or unstable idle
poor throttle response
reduced engine power
vehicle entering limp mode
sudden acceleration problems
Many vehicles also display “Reduced Engine Power” on the dashboard.
Several problems can cause the P2111 code.
Carbon buildup inside the throttle body can prevent the throttle plate from closing properly.
This is one of the most common causes.
The electric motor controlling the throttle plate may fail or become stuck.
Damaged wiring, loose connectors, or corrosion can interrupt the throttle control signal.
Incorrect throttle position readings may cause the ECU to detect that the throttle is stuck.
In many vehicles the sensors and actuator motor are integrated into a single unit.
If the system fails, the entire throttle body assembly may need replacement.
Repair costs depend on the cause of the problem.
Typical repair costs include:
| Problem | Repair Cost |
|---|---|
| Throttle body cleaning | $80 – $200 |
| Wiring repair | $100 – $400 |
| Throttle actuator motor replacement | $300 – $800 |
| Electronic throttle body replacement | $400 – $1,000 |
Cleaning the throttle body often solves the problem if carbon buildup caused the throttle plate to stick.
Driving with this code is not recommended.
The vehicle may experience:
⚠ sudden high idle
⚠ reduced engine power
⚠ unpredictable throttle response
⚠ limp mode activation
For safety reasons, the issue should be diagnosed and repaired immediately.
Professional diagnosis usually includes:
✔ scanning throttle position data
✔ testing throttle actuator motor operation
✔ inspecting throttle body condition
✔ checking wiring and connectors
Mechanics may also perform a throttle body relearn procedure after repairs.
The P2111 code indicates that the electronic throttle actuator is stuck open.
Common causes include:
dirty throttle body
faulty actuator motor
throttle position sensor issues
wiring problems
Repairing the issue early can restore normal throttle control and engine performance.
